Mommy makeover is a combined type of surgery that aims restore body of the mother, which has suffered from changes due to pregnancy and postpartum period, to its prepartum (before pregnancy) condition.

Mommy makeover usually involves breast aesthetic, tummy tuck and liposuction. Types of surgeries performed for these body parts are subject to inter-patient variations.
Mommy makeover basically involves tummy tuck, breast aesthetic and liposuction. Stretch marks may occur in abdominal skin secondary to pregnancy. These marks are also an indication of poor skin quality. Moreover, abdominal muscles may weaken and separate (rectus diastasis) in the pregnancy. When mommy makeover is performed, excess abdominal skin is removed and abdominal muscles are re approximated.
Thus, patient’s abdomen will look firm, fit and athletic. In addition, waist circumference will be reduced with liposuction performed in flanks, back and lower back. As a result, waistline will be narrower and look athletic and charmingly curved.

Who are good candidates for
Mommy Makeover?
Mommy makeover surgery can be performed 1 year after delivery at the earliest. Completion of breastfeeding period is crucial especially for breast surgeries.
The most suitable time for breast surgeries is 1 year after completion of breastfeeding. If breast surgery is performed in an earlier period, the volume of breast cannot be exactly evaluated as the mammary ducts in the breast are active and breast tissue becomes vulnerable to infections.
How is Mommy Makeover performed?
Mommy makeover is a surgery that takes approximately 5 to 6 hours and can be performed under general anesthesia. Routine preoperative workups are performed and the patients are assessed by anesthesiologist. Related consent forms are obtained from all patients before the surgeries and patients’ photographs are taken from the right angles.
In my own practice, I prefer to take photographs one day before the surgery. In the morning on the day of surgery, surgery is planned and drawings are made for the regions to be operated. Although the course varies from patient to patient, mommy lift procedure starts with liposuction. After fat removal is performed with liposuction procedure, abdominoplasty is carried out.
Finally, breast surgery is performed. Drains are placed in regions where liposuction is performed, breast regions and abdominoplasty sites during the surgery. The aim of placing these drains is to drain the blood and fluids that can accumulate in surgery site and help elimination of edema. Wound dressing is performed and patients are worn corsets at the end of the surgery. After the patient completely recovers from anesthesia, the patient is transferred to the inpatient clinic.

What Should Patients Take Care of After Mommy Makeover?
Patients should be physically active to maximum extent after mommy lifting procedures. The longer patients walk without tiring themselves, the faster postoperative recovery is. Lower consumption of sugar and salt after the surgery will ensure quicker regression of edema. Since patients are undergone abdominoplasty, they should not carry or lift heavy objects for 6 weeks. Patients, who undergo breast surgery, are recommended not to raise their arms too much for 6 weeks.
How About Postoperative Recovery Period?
Patients should start walking immediately after mommy makeover. Although mobilization will be difficult for several days due to drains, it is so crucial to walk in this period.
Drains are removed 5 to 6 days after the surgery on average and patients can move more easily thereafter. Bending the body slightly forward while walking will alleviate strain in abdomen in first 1 week especially after abdominoplasty. Patients can walk easily in upright position thereafter. Patients can return to usual daily life 2 weeks after mommy makeover. Patients are recommended to avoid lifting heavy objects and raising their arms too much for approximately 6 weeks after the surgery.

If more children are planned in the near future, it is better to wait, especially on the abdominoplasty. Additional pregnancies are possible following abdominoplasty. However, the final result may not be as good if the tissues are stretched again with another pregnancy.
There is always scarring associated with surgery. An abdominoplasty, a breast lift, as well as a breast augmentation all involve some type of scarring; however, these generally heal very well and are well hidden by any bikini or bra garments.
